Lichfield

The county of Staffordshire is 18 miles north of Birmingham. The city is rich in history. There are traces of a Prehistoric settlement throughout the city. Over 230 historic buildings have been preserved making it a traditional haven in the urban landscape of the West Midlands.

Lichfield was made famous two centuries later, in 666AD, when St Chad the Bishop of Mercia declared Lyccidfelth his bishop's chair. The area became the center of Christianity in the Kingdom, better known as the Midlands. Lichfield was a popular pilgrimage site for many years after Chad's 672AD death. The bishop's seat was moved to Chester in the 11th century, following a Viking attack against the Kingdom of Mercia. As a place of repose for his remains, a Saxon church was built. This was followed by the construction of a Norman Cathedral (in 1085).
